Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award

The “Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award” is a national awards program sponsored by Pharmacists Mutual and state pharmacy associations.  Created in 1987, the award is designed to:
*    To encourage young pharmacist participation in association and community activities; and
*    To annually recognize one young pharmacist in each state for involvement and dedication to the practice of pharmacy.

Robert G. Gibbs Distinguished Pharmacist Award  

The "Robert G. Gibbs Distinguished Pharmacist Award" is presented to a pharmacist in recognition of outstanding contributions to the profession of pharmacy and the Iowa Pharmacy Association.  The recipient receives a recognition plaque and their name is included on a master plaque at the IPA headquarters.  In addition, a five-hundred dollar scholarship grant is awarded to the recipient’s college of pharmacy of choice.  The Distinguished Pharmacist Award, the highest recognition provided to a pharmacist by IPA, was initiated in 1979 in honor of IPA’s past Executive Officer, Robert G. Gibbs, who served the Association from 1959-1979.

Bowl of Hygeia Award Contact Joan Stover at IPA for nomination information

The “Bowl of Hygeia Award” is designed to provide special recognition to a pharmacist who has made considerable contributions in the area of community service.  Co-sponsored by the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Association and APhA, the award is part of a national awards program which recognizes one pharmacist from each state for outstanding community service.  The award consists of a handsome mahogany plaque featuring the “Bowl of Hygeia” carved in bronze.  The name of the recipient of this award is also included on a master plaque which is permanently displayed in the offices of the Iowa Pharmacy Association.

Selection is made by a committee of civic leaders from throughout the state.

Insight Scholarship Award - this award is no longer given but is listed here for historical value

The Insight Scholarship was an award sponsored by the Iowa Pharmacy Foundation and AmeriSource and supported by the Iowa Pharmacy Association, Drake University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy.  It was designed to recognize pharmacy student leadership and vision.  Students write essays addressing timely topics and are awarded for their vision for the profession and ability to clearly articulate ideas and issues. It was discontinued in 2003, with Foundation dollars being shifted to other student support initiatives.

Patient Care Partner Award 

The Patient Care Partner Award was designed to recognize an innovative and creative practice that has demonstrated an enhanced level of care in an Iowa community, and brings health care providers together to better serve their patients.  The award will be presented to a physician, medical practice, clinic, or other health care provider who has developed a patient care program that works cooperatively with patients and pharmacists to optimize patient care.

Karbeling Leadership Award

Karbeling Leadership was developed in tribute to the late Jerry Karbeling for his tireless leadership and dedication to the profession of pharmacy and especially to his passion for student involvement in professional associations and the political process.  The Karbeling Leadership Award recognizes a student from each of Iowa’s two colleges of pharmacy for their individual leadership and involvement in professional organizations and the political process.

Poster Presentation Award

The Poster Presentation Award recognizes one original project each year that advances the practice of pharmacy in Iowa.  Poster abstracts are submitted prior to the IPA Annual Meeting and are utilized to judge award nominees.  The final award selection is based on the overall poster presentation.  Posters are judged on originality/innovation, reproducibility, impact on the profession, presentation and methodology.

            Cardinal Health GenerationRx Award

The Cardinal Health GenerationRx Award is designed to recognize a pharmacist who has demonstrated excellence in community-based prescription drug abuse prevention. The award is intended to recognize outstanding efforts within the pharmacy community to raise awareness of this serious public health problem. It is also intended to encourage educational prevention efforts aimed at patients, youth, and other members of the community.  

This award includes a $500 donation to the charity of the recipient's choice.
